4/20 – 2020: Let The Blogging Begin

If you’re reading this. Welcome to my travel blog.

My name is Bob, I am a 20 something travel enthusiast. Originally from the United Kingdom, I have spent over 10 years living on the road and work abroad. For the first few years, I’d earn money to fund travelling by picking up bar work across European holiday resorts, kitchen porter jobs, bar promotions, event promotions, even selling sunbeds on the beaches of Greece.

After a few years of working cash in hand. I began focusing more on making money online, it seemed like a scam at first. But I had met so many other travellers, on round the worlds trips, travelling long-term or indefinably. And it seemed to work.

There wasn’t an overnight success by any means, but within a few years, I had started to generate enough income through my online businesses to survive on the road. Not living in luxury by any means, but living with freedom and no ties to a job that required a physical presence.

Welcome to 2020– Coronavirus.

Some of the online businesses I managed were in the tourism sector, withing weeks reservations dried up. And refunds began to pile up. But the bulk of my income came from SEO and marking jobs. Where I work with clients to improve the quality of their websites, that would lead to higher rankings in search engines.

Travel is my niche, that’s what I know. 100% of my clients were within the travel and tourism sector. 100% of my clients were left without an income, which obviously meant my services were no longer required.

I had grafted for years to build up multiple revenue streams online. All travel related. Never did I expect to see global travel ground to an instant halt like I am seeing now.

Which I why I am starting this travel blog, over my years of travelling, I have dedicated my time to working and writing for websites owned by other people. Now, it’s my turn.

I have no income, no work and I have as much free time as I need.

And as Walt Disney famously said, “The way to get stated is to quit talking, and begin doing”.

So that is what I am doing, I’m starting.

Today on the April 4th, 2020. This is my first blog post and hopefully there will be many more to come.

Time is an investment and right now it is what I have the most of.

I was in Thailand when the virus hit, and I had a choice, stay put here or return to the UK before the airports closed.

I’d been on the road for so long that I didn’t really have anywhere to return to. I stayed put, and I’m glad I did. I am surrounded by nature, oceans and beaches. On one of Thailand’s most popular islands. I have never seen the island without tourists before, even most of the locals have left. It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.

And in being here, it has given me enough inspiration and motivation to publish my first few blogs and to get started.

So what are my goals.

Having travel return to ‘normal’ would be nice, but that’s a little above my pay grade. Until then I’ll be camping out in Thailand and working on writing new content for my blog.

I would like to visit every single country on the planet as a life goal. I’d also like to visit another planet, but I might be a little too early for space exploration.

Short term, my plans for this blog are to publish a new post every day. I’d like to have 150 posts out there before 2021 comes around. I have plenty of travel stories from the past few years which I have never shared, so I won’t run short of content ideas.

I’d also like to have earned £1 from this travel blog, within three months.

My site traffic is 0 hits a month right now. This is my first ever blog post on backpackbob.com. And none in their right mind is searching for travel content at the moment. So I doubt anyone is reading this. I am writing this for myself, to hold myself accountable. But if you are reading this, get out of here, and go and check out whatever my latest article is here.

BackPackBOB

Hi, Im Robb. And I live on holiday. Welcome to 'Backpack Bob. No, I didn’t quit my job and sell everything to travel the world. I initially funded all my travels by working abroad. But that doesn’t mean I’m here to save you money, or to help you travel smarter. I just enjoy writing about the places I’ve been. It’s more of a memoir for myself, to look back on in the future. But if you find my guides useful, then you are very welcome here. My journey started in 2016 when I decided not to return from a one-month vacation. And when the lockdowns happened in 2020. I found myself stranded in Thailand, (where I now live for six months of the year). I used that time to finally start this blog and share my stories. People have often told me I should write a book about my adventures, so this is the next best thing. For the love, not the money.
