where to stay on phi phi island

Best Areas To Stay On Phi Phi Island

The are six Phi Phi Islands, but only one of the Phi Phi Islands has hotels. The other five islands are national parks and construction or overnight stays are prohibited.

Phi Phi Don is the main island and it’s where all the Phi Phi Island Hotels are located. The island is small but it’s broken up into a few neighbourhoods. The most popular area to stay in Tonsai Town, this is where most of the accommodation is located, most of the bars, restaurants and entertainments are found and it is where the main pier is built. So travellers will arrive at Tonsai Town first.

But there are four main neighbourhoods that are home to Phi Phi Island Hotels. Some are quieter than others, some are more remote and some are more expensive. But choosing the right place to stay in Koh Phi Phi can make or break a trip. And if you’re not in Phi Phi for the nightlife, you might not enjoy staying in Tonsai Town.

Here is a quick guide to the four neighbourhoods for Phi Phi Island Hotels.

Tonsai Town

Most Phi Phi Island Hotels are located in Tonsai Town. If you want the full experience of Phi Phi Island this is where you’ll want to stay. It’s easy to reach as ferries dock at the towns main pier. In Tonsai Town you’ll find accommodation from budget backpackers dorms all the way to five-star beach front Phi Phi Island Hotels.

It’s the place to stay if you want to be within walking distance from the restaurants, bars and entertainment. But the number one complaint about staying in Tonsai Town is people find it too loud. Hotels near Phi Phi Islands Loh Dalum Beach are notoriously loud, so if you’re not looking to party, want to get a good nights sleep- but you want to stay near the town you’ll need to find accommodation closer to Tonsai Beach, where things are much more peaceful.

Best Phi Phi Island Hotel In Tonsai Town

I would recommend Mama Beach Resort. It’s not the cheapest by any means, but it is a peaceful hotel on the beach, in the town and away from the Phi Phi Island Nightlife.

phi phi island hotel mama beach
Mama Beach Phi Phi Island Hotel is right on the beach in a prime location. It is a five to ten-minute walk to the main beach and quiet enough that you can get some sleep. Without having to sacrifice on location.

CHECK THE CURRENT PRICE AT MAMA BEACH RESORT HERE (BOOKING.COM)

Long Beach

Long Beach is a thirty-minute walk from Tonsai Town and the area is much quieter. There is a ‘package holiday’ vibe to the Long Beach and it is not my favourite place to stay on the island. Although it is a nice spot for a day trip.

Read more here about how to walk to Long Beach from Tonsai Town

Prices for Phi Phi Island Hotels at Long Beach are more expensive than in the town. Yet they offer no more value. At Long Beach, you’ll find yourself in a small community of mini-marts, restaurants and massage parlours. But you’ll have limited choice on where to eat, for example.

Long Beach is most suited to families or ‘non-adventurous’ travellers that prefer to spend the entire vacation beside a pool with a drink in hand.

Best Hotel In Phi Phi Long Beach Neighbourhood

, In my opinion, I’d recommend the Viking Nature Resort as the best hotel at Phi Phi Long Beach. This hotel isn’t quite on Long Beach itself but it’s tucked away in the Jungle right behind. You can have your own bamboo hut some have ocean views and some are even on the beaches themselves.

Viking Nature Resort has bamboo and timber local huts on the beach. It’s located at Long Beach, one of the quietest areas on Phi Phi Island.

Phi Phi Island Village

The Phi Phi Island Village is a small town on Phi Phi Dons East Coast. To get here you’ll need to take the ferry into Tonsai Town and when you arrive you’ll need to find a local long-boat captain to taxi you and you luggage to the hotel.

It is a very nice area to stay in Phi Phi Island and is much more chilled out than the main town. There are restaurants, chilled out bars and some of the most beautiful beaches here all within walking distance.

The Phi Phi Island Village Resort is the most popular place to stay here and staying at Phi Phi Island Village Resort comes with a catch, it is not a cheap hotel and you’ll find yourself spending most of your time on the hotel’s grounds or spending money in their restaurants. But it is a very authentic place to base yourself.

Best Hotel In Phi Phi Island Village Area

There are a handful of hotels here, remote and secluded from the typical madness you’d expect from Koh Phi Phi. But the best place to stay here has to be the Phi Phi Island Village Beach Resort.

Phi Phi Island Village Beach Resort is a luxury hotel on Phi Phi Island. Located on the sea front in a quiet Phi Phi Neighbourhood.

Laem Tong Beach

Laem Tong Beach is home to the most beautiful Phi Phi Island Hotels and its the most beautiful place to stay on the island (and also the most expensive area). There is a pier at Laem Tong and a handful of ferries will make a stop here after first stopping in the town.

At Laem Tong you’ll find yourself away from the hustle and bustle which most people experience in Koh Phi Phi and instead,, you’ll find yourself on a tropical Thai, paradise island. It’s a great place for a couple to stay. And if you want to spend a day visiting the town you can jump on the ferry or hire a long boat captain.

Best Hotel In Laem Tong Beach Neighbourhood

Laem Tong is where the most luxurious hotels are located in Phi Phi Island. It’s a beautiful beach on the northern tip of Phi Phi Don Island in a world of its own. This is where the Zevola Resort is located and The Phi Phi Natural Resort. But in my opinion, the best Phi Phi Hotel to stay at in Laem Tong is the Erewan Palms Resort.

Best Phi Phi Island Hotels For Backpackers

Phi Phi Island wouldn’t be the place it is today without backpackers leading the way. The island was popular with backpackers and budget travellers in the 80s’ until late 2000s’. Nowadays Phi Phi Island is focusing more towards a luxury demographic. But that doesn’t mean you can’t find budget accommodation on Koh Phi Phi. Here are my top places to stay on Phi Phi Island for backpackers.

Chao Koh Dorm Rooms

where to stay in phi phi island for backpackers
Chao Koh Dorm Rooms are my top pick for backpackers looking for budget accommodation in Phi Phi Islands

If you’re looking for a low cost but clean and comfortable place to stay on Phi Phi Island, you’ll find yourself at home in the Chao Koh Dorm Rooms. The Chao Koh Dorms are on the quieter side of the island so it’s possible to get some sleep here and the prices are the lowest you’ll find on the island. A bed here stars at 300 Baht per night. There is an ocean view from the window and you’ll find yourself on the beach as soon as you step outside.

Chao Koh also have a nearby restaurant and coffee shop where you’ll be eligible for a discount if you’re staying here. It’s a social place to stay, and it’s a great place to meet other travellers.

Tropical Garden Bungalows

tropical garden bungalows where to stay on phi phi island
Tropical Garden Bungalow are a great place for backpackers to stay on Phi Phi Island

Just because you’re backpacking it doesn’t mean you have to stay in a hostel or a Dorm Room. If you’re travelling with friends, as a group or as a couple. You can often bag yourself a private room for the same cost as two dorm beds.

At the tropical garden bungalows you’ll find private rooms going for 600 Baht per night. There is a swimming pool for guests, a pool side bar and some communal hangout areas.

The bungalows are located a short 10 minute walk from the main beach, so the location in quiet enough to get some sleep. But like everything in Koh Phi Phi, it’s a short walk to the nightlife, shops and restaurants.

Best Phi Phi Island Hotels For Couples

Phi Phi Island can be a romantic island to get away to, there are beachfront restaurants, hidden beaches with clear waters and you’ll easily find romance and charm on a private long-tail boat ride. But where are the best places to stay in Phi Phi Island for couples?

Gypsy Sea View

where to stay on phi phi island for couples

Finding a romantic hotel suitable for couples doesn’t have to break the bank, most hotels targeted towards couples in Phi Phi Island are ridiculously expensive. But that doesn’t have to be the case. The Gypsy Sea View hotel offers great value for money and you book a private room here for around 2,500 Baht per night.

The name is a little misleading as there isn’t a sea view, but if is close by to both Long Beach and the main beach on the island. The landscape surrounding the resort is mountainous. It’s calming and secluded. With a private swimming pool, mini bar, inexpensive room rates and friendly staff couples will love this Phi Phi Island Hotel.

CHECK THE CURRENT PRICE AT GYPSY SEA VIEW HOTEL HERE (BOOKING.COM)

Bay View Resort

best phi phi island hotels for couples

Bay View Resort is the perfect Phi Phi Island Hotel for couples it’s located in a peaceful neighbourhood on the island in the hillside at Laem Hin Beach. The villas overlook the beach and have views or the neighbouring Phi Phi Leh Island.

It’s a ten to fifteen minute walk to the main town on the island, but the walk is along the beach front- and there are a few chilled open air bars on the way. If you don’t fancy the walk you’ll be pleased to know the resort offers free shuttles from the beach to the island main pier in their long-tail boat.

On site dining facilities are perfect for couples, wooden tales are set up along the private beach front under canopies where you can enjoy a candle lit dinner right on the beach. The is also an open air restaurant overlooking the beach and a sea food buffet mist nights.

Prices here are affordable, and even during the peak season you can usually find your self a room for around 3,000 Baht per night.

Best Luxury Phi Phi Island Hotels

You’ll find Phi Phi ISland hotels suited to all needs and budgets, but if you’re looking for the best you can get. These are the top luxury hotels to consider.

Phi Phi Princess Resort

luxury beach villa with private swimming pool phi phi island hotels where to stay in phi phi

The Phi Phi Princess Resort was one of the first hotels to open on Phi Phi Island. As such it’s set in a prime location looking out over Phi Phi Islands main beach. The villa’s here don’t come cheap there are only three available so you want to book early on if you want to stay here, but it can set you back almost 10,000 Baht a night for a villa.

Villas at the Princess Resort have their own full sized private swimming pools looking out onto the beach. On site there are another three swimming pools which are open to guests at the resort. There coffee shops, food stalls and and international buffet for breakfast and dinner on site.

The downside to having a room in such a perfect location is how close you will be to the nightlife. Parties carry on on the beaches until 1:00 am, and you’ll hear the music from the resort.

Zevola Luxury Resort

luxury hotel on phi phi island private swimming pool zevola resort

The Zevola Resort is Phi Phi Islands most luxurious hotel. It’s the only five-star hotel on Phi Phi Island. Rooms have private swimming pools on the balconies, overlooking the sea. And the location is far away from the main town.

Staying at the Zelova Resort will mean staying on Laem Tong Beach Beach, in the north of Phi Phi Island. The location is secluded and beautiful, giving your tropical island vibes; far from the madness, most people come to the island for.

Phi Phi Island Hotels With The Best Views

You’d expect on a remote island to find accommodation with great views, overlooking the ocean. And plenty of beach bungalows. That was the case in the late 80s’ but now most of the beaches on Phi Phi Island are occupied by bars or nightlife venues. Beach bungalows are long gone, unfortunately. But there are still a few places to stay on Phi Phi Island where you’ll have an ocean view. Here are the best hotels on Koh Phi Phi with a view.

Cliff Beach Resort

luxury phi phi island hotel sea view

Cliff Beach is a unique hotel on Phi Phi Island. Prices here aren’t the cheapest but the location is everything. You’ll find yourself a short five minute walk from the main pier on a private beach.

The hotel boasts a rooftop infinity pool that overlooks the ocean. All the rooms here have incredible views.

Villa 360 Phi Phi Hotel

phi phi island hotel villa 360

The Villa 360 Resort offers some of the best views going on Phi Phi Island and it’s a perfect hotel for couples. Set in the hillside on the east coast of the island this hotel is secluded and cut off from the main town. You have solitude and peace and quiet here. All the rooms have ocean views and the swimming pool overlooks the sea.

There is a fitness centre bars and restaurants on-site. The downside of this resort is you’ll be limited for things to do and places to eat, the main town is a 20-minute boat ride away. So while it is a nice place to relax for a night or two, you might find yourself wanting to move to a hotel closer to the town after a few nights of solitude.

Arboreal Phi Phi Island Resort

arboreal phi phi island hotel

If you’re looking for a Phi Phi hotel room with a view you’ll love the Arboreal Resort. The rooms here are in the hillside overlooking the island. You’ll have views of both beaches and the entire town. The rooms here are located at the same height as the Phi Phi Viewpoint One. But the downside is you’ll have to hike to the viewpoint (almost) to get to your room.

Best Phi Phi Island Hotels For Nature Lovers

Phi Phi Sea Sky Resort

where to stay on phi phi island ocean view hotel private beach bungalow

At the Phi Phi Sea Sky Resort you can stay in a Private Bungalow on stilts, overlooking the ocean. The resort is hidden away on a remote beach. It is a little far to walk here, which is one of the downsides of having a Phi Phi Hotel room tucked away in nature. But the views are amazing.

The Viking Nature resort is the ultimate place to stay on Phi Phi Island for nature lovers. The private bungalows are built from natural materials, tucked way in the remote Phi Phi jungle. Best Phi Phi Island Hotels For Families

Holiday Inn Resort Phi Phi Island

Hi, Im Robb. And I live on holiday. Welcome to 'Backpack Bob. No, I didn’t quit my job and sell everything to travel the world. I initially funded all my travels by working abroad. But that doesn’t mean I’m here to save you money, or to help you travel smarter. I just enjoy writing about the places I’ve been. It’s more of a memoir for myself, to look back on in the future. But if you find my guides useful, then you are very welcome here. My journey started in 2016 when I decided not to return from a one-month vacation. And when the lockdowns happened in 2020. I found myself stranded in Thailand, (where I now live for six months of the year). I used that time to finally start this blog and share my stories. People have often told me I should write a book about my adventures, so this is the next best thing. For the love, not the money.
