Sometimes we need a little inspiration before travelling, and watching a travel movie never fails to get the wanderlust flowing. You might even have a trip booked already, a one-way ticket, about to venture out into the world. The best travel movies can get you even more excited about the changes to come.
I spent a lot of time on long-haul and intercontinental flights over the years. Which is more often than not where I find myself watching the greatest and the best travel movies. After all, there isn’t that much time to switch on Netflix after touching down in a new destination.
Over the years of travelling I’ve had plenty of time to curate my list of the best travel movies, this isn’t the same typical generic list you’ll find out there. These are my personal favourites, a mix of movies, documentaries, extended tv specials and a couple of travel-inspired tv series too. Most of them are light heated, but all of them have inspired me to travel and sparked wanderlust at some point in my life. Comedies, Drama’s, Action movies and even some Netflix originals- I hope these movies provide you with as much inspiration to travel and they did for me.
I’ll also include some information about where the movies were shot, so if you fancy getting yourself a plane ticket, you’ll know exactly where to fly to! And if you just want to curl up on the couch with the best travel movie without having to leave your living room- I’ll also let you know where to watch, rent or buy all the movies I recommend.
So keep on reading to find the 75 best travel movies 82 best travel movies of all time.
All of these travel movies are available on Amazon Prime- you can watch all 82 with a Prime subscription. And using this link will save you 80% with your first month free. Some are available on Netflix and I’ll mark which ones are. But with the ever-changing Netflix catalogue and different region availabilities, I’d recommend sticking with Amazon for the time being.

- You Might Not Know: Fox paid $81,000 to take over the beach for a month, due to the popularity of the travel movie the beach became a tourist attraction which earned the Department for National Parks the same figure every single day.
It should come as no surprise to find The Beach at the top of my best travel movies list. Released in 2000, it’s not the greatest movie ever, and to be honest, the plot kinda sucks. Even the producer, Danny Boyle admitted, halfway through filming he realised that he didn’t like a single one of the characters he’d created. But this takes the top spot as the best travel movie because of the sheer number of people that it’s inspired to travel to Thailand and start their backpacking adventure. It’s easily the most famous movie about backpacking ever made.
The movie based on Alex Garland’s book stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a young American backpacker, willing to risk his life for the ultimate adventure. After hearing about a secret island Richard set off in search of the secret paradise beach. Learn more about where the beach was filmed.
Even Nomadic Matt, who proudly hates Koh Phi Phi (where the movie was filmed) admitted that the film had him “drooling over Thailand”.
Top Gear: Vietnam Special (2008)

This is far from your typical travel movie, but for anyone planning a trip to Vietnam, it’s a must-watch. Packed with adventure and humour this unscripted ‘documentary’ has inspired many others to travel the length of Vietnam on bikes.
The 75-minute unscripted show follows three British TV presenters, each given 15 million Dong ($100) to spend on some wheels to cross from Ho Chi Minh City in the south to Halong Bay in the north. They soon realise their budget of 15 million Dong isn’t as much as they’d first thought. The boys have just 8 days to make the 1,000-mile journey showing off some incredible scenery, beaches, cultural aspects and quirks of Vietnam along the way.
Here’s the route the the presenters took on the show:
- Day 1: Ho Chi Minh to Da Lat
- Day 2: Da Lat to Cam Ranh
- Day 3: Cam Ranh to Hoi Ann
- Day 4 & 5: Noi Ann to Hue (via the hai van pass and stop at the citadel in hue)
- Day 6: Hue to Hanoi (on the overnight train)
- Day 7: Hanoi to Halong Bay
The Terminal (2004)
- Location(s): New York, USA
- Summary: A European tourist becomes stuck in JFK airport, unable to enter the USA and unable to return home. The movie follows the life of a tourist stuck between international borders, relatable to anyone who has spent a prolonged period of time in airports.
- Where To Watch: YouTube (Trailer) | YouTube (Full Movie) | Amazon | Google | Apple
- Starring: Tom Hanks, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Stanley Tucci
- Where To Learn More: IMBD | Wiki | Rotten Tomatoes
- You Might Not Know: A full-scale airport set was built for the production of this travel movie. The set was based on Dusseldorf international with working escalators and elevators. Brands were quick to contact Dreamworks to have a replica of their store built in the fictional airport.
A few years back I had a similar experience in a Chinese Airport, (Chongquing), I was denied entry to China and denied permission to leave China at the same time. Although I managed to resolve my situation after a day in the terminal. The same can’t be said for Tom Hanks.
The next time you find yourself with a long wait in an airport, take a moment to imagine what things were like for Viktor Navorski (Tom Hanks) who was confined to JFK airports international transit lounge for an indefinite amount of time- in “The Terminal”.
This travel movie is focused around a European tourist, Viktor Navorski, who was denied entry to the United States due to a sudden civil war outbreak in his home country of Krakozia. As a result, Navorski was made to stay inside the airport terminal. Unable to enter the USA, and unable to return home.
The movie highlights the struggles faced by Navorski and offering a relatable experience to any travellers that have spent a prolonged amount of time in airports. Personally I love the experience of hanging around in an airport, waiting for a flight. Airports are a unique place, everyone is in a different time zone, sleeping on the floor is socially acceptable, day drinking is fine. And there is an atmosphere of excitement in the air. Plus I have plenty of time to catch up on work or pass some time people watching. And in some Airports like Singapore’s Changi, there are swimming pools, saunas, gyms, bars, rooftop terraces, cinemas- even an artificial rainforest complete with a waterfall. Not a bad place to kill some time.
Cast Away (2000)

- Where To Learn More: IMBD | Wiki | Rotten Tomatoes
- You Might Not Know: Travel movies and Tom Hanks don’t often end well and in Castaway things are no different. But did you know, one of the three “Wilson” volleyballs used in the film was later sold for $20,000 at auction.
Here is another movie starring Tom Hanks. This time rather than stuck in an Airport Terminal, Hanks in stranded on a desert island in one of the best travel movies of all time.
When a FedEx employee, Chuck Noland is the sole survivor of a plane crash, on a flight bound for Malaysia. His life is changed forever. Finding himself of the shores or a tropical, deserted island he quickly has to come to terms with how slim his chances are of ever getting back to civilisation.

A photograph of his girlfriend and his only companion ‘Wilson’ gave him home all these years until one day Chuck takes an opportunity to return home- setting sail on a wooden raft that washed up onshore.
The Italian Job (2003)
- Location(s): Venice, Italy | Los Angeles, USA
- Summary: “You’ll never shut down the real Napster”. After a daring heist on the Venice canals, Charlie Croker and crew are betrayed and left for dead. The survivors plot their revenge and track down their former ally in LA.
- Where To Watch: YouTube (Trailer) | YouTube (Full Movie) | Amazon | Google | Apple
- Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, Edward Norton,
- Where To Learn More: IMBD | Wiki | Rotten Tomatoes
- You Might Not Know: The actors performed most of the stunts, including driving down the stairs to the metro station. Electric mini-coopers had to be specially produced for this travel movie since for safety reasons gas-powered vehicles couldn’t be operated in Los Angeles subway system.
The remake is better than the original, there I said it.
One of the best travel films is set in Venice, Italy. A crew of organised criminals pull of a thrilling heist, taking 30 million dollars worth of gold bricks. The film takes a dark twist when one of the gang betrays his companions, taking the entire loot for himself and leaving his pals for dead.
The surviving team members track down Steve and find him living in Los Angeles, where a daring plan is put into place to take back the gold bars and reap their revenge.
The Inbetweeners II

- Where To Watch: YouTube (Trailer) | YouTube (Full Movie) | Amazon | Google | Apple
- Starring: Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison, Joe Thomas
- Where To Learn More: IMBD | Wiki | Rotten Tomatoes
- You Might Not Know: There is no mention of the boy’s previous love interests in the second Australian travel movie. Both Carli D’Amato and Charlotte Hinchcliffe are cut from the script.
One of the greatest comedy travel movies of all time. Following on from the successful television series and the first movie which saw the beloved and relatable characters embark on a lads holiday to Malia in Greece. The second instalment saw the boys heading further afield on a working holiday and backpacking trip down-under. I’ll be honest and say that I think the first instalment is a better movie, but while the first is more of a travel comedy movie, the second is a solid travel movie guaranteed a to get a laugh.

- Where To Watch: YouTube (Trailer) | YouTube (Full Movie) | Amazon | Google | Apple

- Where To Learn More: IMBD | Wiki | Rotten Tomatoes
- You Might Not Know: Mieke’s last name is Schmidt, which can be seen in an email on screen in the last sequence.
This travel movie is a little cheesy, I’ll admit, but it’s worth a watch. When an American teenager travels to Europe in search of his German pen-pal, he brings a trio of friends along on a comedic adventure following the friends through popular European cities. Through Amsterdam, Rome, Berlin, Paris and London.
If you’ve ever backpacked across Europe, been inter-railing of wish you had (it isn’t too late), this fun travel movie will bring back some nostalgia or even some inspiration to visit Europe.

- You Might Not Know: Conditions in Nepal and on the mountain weren’t always perfect for shooting. Therefore some scenes were shot in Pinewood Studios in the United Kingdom, and real snow was imported from The Netherlands.
Everest is an inspiring travel movie based on a true story. In 1996 climbers began their final ascent towards the summit of Mount Everest, the tallest mountain on earth. But disaster strikes and with no warning a violent storm hits the mountain, trapping the climbers in a fierce and deadly blizzard. Battling the challenging conditions and against all odds, the travellers endure blistering winds and freezing temperatures in a battle for survival.
The Hangover Part II (2011)
- Location(s): Bangkok, Thailand
- Summary: A hilarious travel comedy, the wolf-pack have to retrace the steps on the most eventful night of their lives in order to track down and save their buddy, Teddy.
- Where To Watch: YouTube (Trailer) | YouTube (Full Movie) | Amazon | Google | Apple
- Starring: Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis and Ken Jeong
- Where To Learn More: IMDB | Wiki | Rotten Tomatoes
- You Might Not Know: The Hangover glorifies drinking culture, so you might be surprised to learn that the movies Bradley Cooper is tee-total and has been since 29 years old. On the other hand, Mike Tyson was drunk in a Las Vegas club where the travel movie was being shot. Todd Phillips and Justin Bartha took this opportunity to pitch him the idea of taking a role in the movie.
The second instalment in a trilogy of hilarious travel movies. If you’ve seen the first film you’ll know that this group of friends shouldn’t drink together. Because when they do, things go terribly wrong. Two years on from the first film where Doug goes missing after an eventful night out on the Las Vegas Strip the boys vowed nothing like this could ever happen again.
This time around it’s the turn of Stu who is set o be married in Thailand, after what was supposed to be a chilled night on the beach drinking beer and roasting marshmallows, history repeats itself and Stu, Phil, Alan and Doug wake up in a run down apartment complex in the heart of Bangkok. Teddy is missing- leaving a severed finger behind.
The wolf pack have to put together the event of the previous night once more to track down and save Teddy. And after trashing an entire street in Bangkok, getting face tattoos and ticking off the wrong people. Everything that could have gone wrong, has.
The Office (2005 – 2013)
- Location(s): Scranton, Pennsylvania
- Summary: As far from a travel movie as you can get, but perfect to binge-watch on a long haul flight or a long airport connection.
- Where To Watch: YouTube (Trailer) | Amazon | Google | Apple
- Starring: Steve Carrell
- Where To Learn More: IMDB | Wiki | Rotten Tomatoes
- Jim and Pam’s proposal scene in season 4 was the most expensive ever at the time, costing a whopping quarter-million dollars to build a replica gas stop.
Ok, so this is about as far as you can get from a travel movie, I’ll admit. It isn’t a movie and it’s set inside an American workplace, the exact opposite of travelling. So you might be wondering why I’ve included The Office on this list of the best travel movies.
It is one of my favourite television series of all time and I know many people will agree, and if you have a long flight coming up or a long connection in an airport and want to kill some time binge-watching Netflix. This is my go-to series. In Fact, I keep my favourite episodes (The Dinner Party and other) offline on my laptop’s hard drive. So even at 30,000 feet, I can always pull up an episode of The Office.
Changeland (2019)
- Location(s): Phi Phi Island, Thailand
- Summary: Two estranged friends embark on a trip to Thailand in search of happiness.
- Where To Watch: YouTube (Trailer) | Amazon | Google | Apple
- Starring: Seth Green, Breckin Meyer, Macaulay Culkin and Brenda Song
- Where To Learn More: IMDB | Wiki | Rotten Tomatoes
- You Might Not Know: Seth Green a co, worked only with local production crews. The only crew they brought from the states were the actors themselves.
I had to include Changeland on my best travel movie list as it hits so close to home, I happened to be working in a bar in Thailand where the movie was being filmed. And there are some familiar faces and ex co-workers which pop up throughout- which is a little weird, but for me, makes this travel movie a little more exciting. If you’re wondering where the movie was shot, it was on Phi Phi Island with the bar scenes being filmed in both the Stones Bar on the Beach and the Reggae Boxing Bar in the town. Find out more about the bars on Phi Phi Islands in my full guide.
Brandon had a surprising anniversary trip to Thailand book for him and his wife, but after he discovered that his wife had been cheating on him invites a long lost friend on the trip instead. He skips town and flees to Thailand on his anniversary, without his wife’s knowledge.
When in Thailand the pair of friends go on excursions and tours catering to couples and honeymooners. Along the trip, the friends come to realise there is no defined path to follow which will lead to happiness and success.
I’ll be honest and say the movie is not the best, the same ‘jokes’ are repeated over and over and it doesn’t feel like the plot ever goes anywhere. But what this movie does offer is the inspiration to travel. It was all filmed on Thailand’s most beautiful island and shows some of the country’s quirks and scenery that make us want to travel in the first place. So if you bear in mind you’ll be watching the backdrop more than the characters- you’ll love this travel movie.
It’s the greatest Thailand travel movie since the beach and has put Phi Phi Islands on the map once more. If you’re looking for inspiration to travel to Thailand, this is the travel movie for you.

This is probably not the best travel movie to watch before getting on a flight, and as others have pointed out, never travel with Tom Hanks! Sully is an inspiring true story. In January 2009, the world witnessed what was dubbed “The Miracle On The Hudson”. After the aircraft was hit by a bird strike and lost power in both engines shortly after take-off, pilot Chesley Sullenberger made the decision to glide the plane down on the Hudson River, rather than attempt to return to the airport. In doing so he saved all one hundred and fifty-five lives on board the aircraft.
